Opening a Dutch business bank account as a non-resident

A business bank account is essential for your Dutch company, but for non-residents it is often the step that takes the longest. This is what to expect and how to prepare.

Why it takes longer for non-residents

Banks are legally required to know their customers and to check where money comes from. For a company whose owners live abroad, these checks are more extensive. That is not a sign of a problem, but it does take time.

What banks usually ask for

Expect questions about your business activities, your customers and suppliers, the expected payment flows and the ultimate beneficial owners. Banks also ask for identification of the directors and UBOs, the KVK extract and sometimes a business plan. Some banks ask you to visit a branch in person.

Traditional banks and online banks

Besides the large Dutch banks, there are online banks and payment institutions that open accounts faster, often fully online. Check that the account has a Dutch or EU IBAN and suits your payment flows, including paying Dutch taxes.

How to speed things up

Start as soon as the BV is registered, submit complete documents in one go and describe your activities clearly and consistently. We help you prepare the application and tell you what the bank is likely to ask.
